Gary Jones is a British journalist, deputy editor of ''The People''〔Dominic Ponsford, ''Press Gazette'', 15 March 2011, (New revelations over journalists' illegal payments )〕 since June 2008.〔''Press Gazette'', 20 June 2008, (Acting editor becomes top man of The People )〕 He was previously at the ''Daily Mirror'' and the ''News of the World''.
In 1995, whilst at the ''News of the World'' under editor Piers Morgan, Jones was named "Reporter of the Year" at the British Press Awards.〔Jon Slattery, ''Press Gazette'', 8 April 2005, (back Issues 08.04.05: Insight team wins two awards )〕 Whilst at the ''Daily Mirror'' (also under Piers Morgan), Jones was one of "three key media contacts" for Southern Investigations, a private detective agency whose investigator Jonathan Rees is said to have "set up () network of corrupt police, customs officials, taxmen and bank staff to gain valuable information".〔Nick Davies, ''The Guardian'', 8 June 2011, (Phone-hacking scandal: Jonathan Rees obtained information using dark arts )〕 Rees was recorded by police telling Jones "that some of what he was doing for the Mirror was illegal".〔
In December 1999 Jones, then investigations editor at the ''Mirror'', published detailed extracts from the medical records of Ian Brady, having paid an intermediary £1500.〔''Daily Telegraph'', 28 June 2002, (Moors murderer story ruling )〕 He moved to ''The People'' in November 2007, becoming deputy editor in June 2008.〔
